Michelle & Mike met at a high school here in Calgary. She was in Grade 11 and he was in Grade 12.  At first they did NOT hit it off.  Michelle was convinced that Mike was arrogant and shallow until her friends convinced her to give him a chance.  They became great friends and eventually started dating.  Then Mike graduated and started working as an electrician and then working on his hockey career.  Believe it or not they ended their relationship thinking that they couldn’t survive with Ashley being home attending high school and Mike working on his own career.  Two years passed and they ran into each other again while he was wiring Michelle’s neighbors newly built garage! To nobody’s surprise they started seeing each other and it wasn’t long before Mike was offered an amazing opportunity in Alaska.  The rest is history! They have been together almost 5 years and endured the hardships of long distance relationship due to Mike’s career in various states in the U.S.  Michelle stayed home and worked as a registered nurse. Thank you Michelle & Mike! It was a beautiful wedding. It was wonderful getting to know you and your lovely family. I wish you the best of luck. Lots of love. Shawna

Wow, just like usual in this part of our world, summer is already winding down.  I had a really good summer this year. I shot a lot of weddings, made a lot friends, and got to know some really amazing people. We still have several more weddings to shoot before the end of the year so it’s not over for me  yet. I also have several new engagement shoots and weddings that will be posted on the blog very soon so there are still lots of love stories to be told through our lens. I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and hang on Calgary as I can feel that fall is coming very soon!

The question of how much to pay for a professional wedding photographer is as interesting as one could imagine.  While many brides and grooms think that anyone can pick up a camera and take photo, that is far from the truth.  So how do you decide how much to spend?

Well the 1st thing you have to do is decide what your budget is for a professional photographer.  How much is too much?  Well you have to take a look at each market.  A wedding photographer in Calgary may be more expensive than the same photographer in a rural area of Alberta.

Once you find a professional photographer within your budget, the 2nd thing you need to do is choose a photographer that does the quality and type of work that you expect.  And one thing to remember is that the bride and groom will be working with the photographer to create the photographs, so it is important that you actually like the photographer.  You have to feel good about him and his feel for you.

Do you ever see a photograph that jumps off the page?  You can’t really describe why it looks so good, but it just does.  How does he do that?  Good Training, great lenses, expensive software and good assistants all add up to a great collection of photographs.  “Cheap” photographers tend to not have the training, lenses, software or assistants that would yield outstanding images.

It means what your mother always said….you get what you pay for.

As Cara approached the Gazebo in Central Park, Banff you could see that Brad was choking back the tears.  Cara had a smile so wide, so bright it illuminated the already bright day. They embraced for minutes, a million lifetimes orbiting around a nucleus of love, and they realized their moment had arrived.

While their friends and family watched Cara and Brad  promised each other to communicate. Promised to love. Promised to remain at each others’ hips until their last breaths. They promised. They kissed. They embraced for minutes and they realized their moment had arrived. They kissed again and everyone cheered!

Cara & Brad you were wonderful. You’ve invited me into your lives, and your hearts and I’m extraordinarily thankful. I know your wedding was merely the start of your lives together, but I also know it’s the start of a life full of  happiness. I know your future is heavily sprinkled with goodness and love. Here are a few of my favorites…

Louise & Tobias met in July 2006, at the zoo. Their first contact was  online which kept them chatting for a couple of months. Tobias couldn’t wait any longer and  decided to travel to Calgary for the stampede! He was very excited to meet Louise in person and what better place than the Calgary Zoo! It was love at first sight!  They walked around the zoo then wined and dined at a downtown restaurant. Their  first date was 9 hours long and both of them did not want it to end. They dated long distance (he was from Winnipeg) for ten months until finally Tobias  moved to Calgary.  The rest is history!   Congratulations Louise & Tobias. I look forward to photographing your special day!

Erin & Jason knew pretty early on in their relationship that they would be together. It cumulated into a perfect wedding in June. The bottom line was that they wanted everyone to have fun, enjoy the  weather, food and spend this special day with the people that matter the most. I am happy to say that I know they got to put a giant check  mark after each one of those items.

From when Jason first saw Erin as she floated down the circular staircase in the hotel atrium to the final shots at the golf course…..the day  was a gorgeous expression of love for each other and for their family and friends. It was a bright and cheerful day and even a little rain couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirit!

Erin & Jason…with my everything, thank you. You both have the biggest hearts and your thoughtfulness did not go unnoticed. I’m honored to have documented your wedding day and I appreciate your over-arching accommodation to anything and everything I could have ever dreamt of asking.
